As part of the Pre-Internship Program titled “Understanding Diverse Minds,” the teacher trainees and inmates visited Thanal Special School, Villagemuku on Tuesday, 23 June 2026, from 10:00 a.m. onwards. The visit was organized to provide participants with practical exposure to special education, inclusive teaching practices, and social welfare initiatives.
The program commenced with a warm welcome by Mr. Shajikumar N., Principal of Thanal Special School. In his welcome address, he highlighted the institution’s commitment to the education and rehabilitation of children with special needs. The Administrator of Thanal also addressed the gathering and shared valuable insights into the services and activities undertaken by the institution.
Dr. Rosa M.C., Principal of SUMCTE, delivered the inaugural address. She emphasized the importance of understanding the diverse needs of learners and encouraged teacher trainees to develop empathy, patience, and professional competence while working with children requiring special support.
During the session, the Vice Principal of Thanal and other faculty members provided a detailed overview of the school’s courses, curriculum, teaching methodologies, and instructional patterns adopted for students with special needs. Their presentations offered participants a deeper understanding of individualized learning approaches and inclusive educational practices.
A significant highlight of the program was the handover of a water purifier to Thanal Special School. The water purifier was donated through the collective efforts of the students and the management of SUMCTE. The purifier was formally handed over by Dr. Rosa M.C. to the representatives of Thanal Special School, symbolizing the institution’s commitment to social responsibility and community support.
Following the inauguration, the teacher trainees visited various classrooms within the school. They observed classroom interactions, teaching strategies, and learning activities designed for children with different abilities. Participants carefully documented their observations and gained first-hand experience of special education practices.
The school authorities also demonstrated robotic therapy, showcasing the innovative technological interventions used to support the learning and development of students with special needs. The demonstration provided valuable insights into modern therapeutic and educational tools.
An orientation session was subsequently conducted by the Thanal Special School team. The session highlighted the various social welfare activities, rehabilitation programs, community outreach initiatives, and support services organized by Thanal. This orientation helped participants understand the broader role of special schools in promoting inclusion and social development.
The program concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Krishnakumar E.P., Assistant Professor of Social Science, who expressed gratitude to the management, faculty, staff, and students of Thanal Special School for their hospitality, guidance, and informative presentations.
The visit proved to be an enriching and educational experience for all participants. It enhanced their understanding of special education, inclusive teaching methodologies, assistive technologies, and the importance of social commitment in the teaching profession. All teaching staff and students actively participated in the program, making it a meaningful and memorable learning experience.
