The Reading Day Celebration was observed with great enthusiasm and literary spirit on 24 June 2026 at the SUM College Auditorium. The programme was organized to commemorate the importance of reading and to promote literary awareness among students and faculty members.
The function commenced with a warm welcome address by Dr. Krishnakumar E.P., IQAC Coordinator, who welcomed the distinguished guests, faculty members, and students. He highlighted the significance of Reading Day in nurturing a culture of reading and lifelong learning.
The programme was presided over by Dr. Rosa M.C., Principal, SUM College of Teacher Education (SUMCTE). In her presidential address, she emphasized the role of reading in personal growth, academic excellence, and the development of critical thinking skills among future educators.
The chief guest and inaugurator of the programme was Ms. Shylaja V.C., State Award Winner and Retired Principal of Irikkur Higher Secondary School. She formally inaugurated the session and delivered an inspiring speech on the value of literature, reading habits, and various writing styles. She encouraged students to cultivate a regular reading practice and explained how literature enriches human experiences, broadens perspectives, and strengthens communication skills. Her insightful address captivated the audience and motivated them to engage more deeply with books and literary works.
As a token of appreciation and recognition of her contributions to the field of education, Ms. Shylaja V.C. was honoured with a trophy presented by Dr. Rosa M.C., Principal, SUMCTE.
The occasion was further enriched by the felicitation address delivered by Ms. Rinsha P.K., who appreciated the efforts of the organizers and highlighted the relevance of Reading Day in the contemporary digital era. She stressed the need to balance technological advancements with the habit of reading books.
The programme concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks proposed by Ms. Hasna C.P., who expressed gratitude to the chief guest, principal, IQAC coordinator, faculty members, students, and all those who contributed to the successful conduct of the event.
The Reading Day celebration served as a meaningful platform to promote literary appreciation and inspire students to develop a lasting interest in reading. The event was a grand success and left a positive impact on all participants. An intercollegiate story writing competition, The Plot Thickens, was also organized as part of this occasion.
