
Introduction
On June 5, 2025, SUM College of Teacher Education in Kannur observed World Environment Day with a series of events aimed at raising environmental awareness and promoting sustainable practices among students and faculty. The celebration was inaugurated by Dr. C.V. Jayasree, the esteemed Principal of SUMCTE, and chaired by Mr. Suneesh K. The event was organized in collaboration with the National Service Scheme (NSS) and the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) of the college.
2. Event Highlights
2.1 Inaugural Session
The day commenced with an inaugural session where Dr. C.V. Jayasree emphasized the importance of environmental conservation and the role educational institutions play in fostering a sense of responsibility towards nature. Mr. Suneesh K. chaired the session, highlighting the significance of collective action in addressing environmental challenges.
2.2 Plantation Drive
Following the inaugural session, students, guided by faculty members, participated in a plantation drive within the campus. Under the direction of Mr. P.E. Divakaran, Mr. Krishnakumar E.P., Mr. George Joseph, and Ms. Praseetha, students planted a variety of vegetables and trees, contributing to the college’s green cover and promoting biodiversity.
3. Objectives of the Celebration
- Raise Awareness: Educate students and faculty about pressing environmental issues and the importance of sustainable practices.
- Encourage Active Participation: Involve the college community in hands-on activities like tree planting to instill a sense of ownership towards environmental conservation.
- Promote Sustainable Practices: Advocate for eco-friendly habits such as reducing plastic usage, conserving water, and promoting waste segregation.
