Report on the Pre-Internship Orientation Programme

The Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) of S.U.M. College of Teacher Education (SUMCTE) organized a Pre-Internship Orientation Programme for the outgoing B.Ed. trainee teachers prior to their practice teaching internship in various schools. The programme was conducted with the objective of equipping the trainees with the knowledge, skills, and professional attitudes required for a successful internship experience.

The programme began with an introductory session highlighting the significance of the school internship as an integral component of teacher education. The orientation focused on familiarizing the trainees with the academic, professional, and ethical expectations during their practice teaching period.

Dr. Krishnakumar E.P. served as the resource person for the orientation. He provided detailed guidance on the preparation and maintenance of internship records, lesson records, reflective journals, observation records, attendance registers, and other documents to be completed during the internship. He explained the systematic procedures for record writing, documentation, and presentation, emphasizing accuracy, clarity, and timely completion. The session also covered the importance of documenting school activities, classroom observations, co-curricular programmes, and reflective practices to ensure comprehensive professional learning.

Following the orientation, Dr. Rosa M.C., Principal, SUMCTE, addressed the trainees and shared valuable suggestions regarding professional conduct in schools. She explained the responsibilities and duties of trainee teachers, stressing the importance of punctuality, discipline, commitment, ethical behaviour, and maintaining cordial relationships with school authorities, teachers, students, and parents. She encouraged the trainees to make effective use of the internship period to develop their teaching competencies, classroom management skills, communication abilities, and professional confidence.

The college’s faculty members also shared their experiences and practical suggestions to help the trainees perform effectively during their internships. Mr. Divakaran P.E., Assistant Professor in Physical Science, discussed the professional ethics and expected conduct of trainee teachers within the school environment. Mr. Sunnes K., Assistant Professor in General Education, emphasized the importance of maintaining positive relationships with students and colleagues while actively participating in curricular and co-curricular activities. Mr. George Joseph, Assistant Prof. Education, Ms. Praseetha P., Assistant Prof. Natural science, Dr. Balakrishnan P., Assistant Prof. Math’s, Mr. Sachin E., Assistant prof. Phy. Education, and Ms. Heba Azad, Assistant. Prof. English education provided valuable insights into lesson planning, classroom management, effective communication, professional behaviour, record-keeping, and the dos and don’ts of practice teaching. They encouraged the trainees to approach the internship with confidence, sincerity, and a willingness to learn.

The Manager of SUMCTE, Mr. C. Ahammed Kutty Master, also addressed the gathering. He motivated the trainees to uphold the dignity of the teaching profession by demonstrating integrity, dedication, responsibility, and respect for institutional values throughout their internship.

An interactive session was held at the end of the programme, during which the trainees actively participated by raising their doubts regarding school practices, internship regulations, record preparation, classroom teaching, attendance, discipline, and institutional expectations. The resource persons and faculty members clarified all queries in detail, enabling the trainees to gain a clear understanding of the internship procedures and expectations.

The programme concluded with renewed confidence among the trainee teachers as they prepared to begin their school internship. The orientation successfully provided comprehensive guidance on professional responsibilities, record maintenance, school etiquette, and effective teaching practices, ensuring that the trainees were well prepared to undertake their practice teaching with competence, commitment, and professionalism.
